Like everywhere in the world, North Wales has produced some of the most famous celebrities in the world. Love or loathe them, it’s a guarantee that you will have at very least heard of them.  From sport to music, literature and beyond, some of the most influential names are our homegrown heroes. With great difficulty, we have managed to whittle the list down to our “Seven Famous Favourites”.

Celebrities of North Wales – Dawn French

Dawn French, Comedienne and Actress: Born in Holyhead.  She rose to fame with her comedy double act with Jennifer Saunders in the popular BBC series French and Saunders. She also stars in The Vicar of Dibley.  She has been nominated for seven BAFTA Awards and won a Fellowship BAFTA with Jennifer Saunders.

Celebrities of North Wales – Carol Vorderman

Carol Vorderman, Media Personality: Although born in Bedford, the mathematical Countdown genius moved to Prestatyn, North Wales.  This was after her parents separated three weeks after she was born. After 26-years on Countdown she has moved into a number of presenting roles.

Ian Fraser ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister, Musician: Best known as the lead vocalist, bassist, principal songwriter and the founding and sole constant member of the heavy metal band Motörhead. Although born in Staffordshire, Lemmy moved to Anglesey, North Wales as a child and became an honorary North Walian.

Timothy Dalton, Actor: The James Bond actor who starred in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill was born in Colwyn Bay, North Wales.

Celebrities of North Wales – Paula Yates

Paula Yates (Presenter): One of the most recognisable celebrities from the 80’s and 90’s.   presenting Channel 4 shows The Tube and The Big Breakfast.  She was alsp wife of Sir Bob Geldof. She was originally from Colwyn Bay, North Wales.

Celebrities of North Wales – Robbie Savage

Robbie Savage, Footballer and TV Pundit: Born in Wrexham, North wale.  The former Welsh midfielder played for a number of sides before moving into Television and Radio punditry.  He Presents 606 on BBC Radio 5 and appearing on BBC‘s Football programmes and Sport Relief.

Rhys Ifans, Actor: Having broke onto the scene as Spike, the slovenly lodger of Hugh Grant’s hero in 1999’s Notting Hill, the Haverfordwest-born and Ruthin-raised, Ifans’ has gone on to have a hugely successful film career. Films include Harry Potter, The Amazing Spider-man and Anonymous.
