To Boost or not to Boost? That is the Question!

10th December 2019

You’ve spent an age creating incredible and original content. You pick a catchy, sharp and relevant image. Your post is neatly presented, and it’s a masterpiece just waiting to be released into the internet community. Excitedly, you hit ‘publish’ and away you go! All you have to do is to sit back and wait for the engagements to roll in!

A few hours pass, a couple of days, maybe even a week. Nothing.

You feel devastated, as you’ve poured a little bit of yourself into this, so why isn’t it working? How frustrating!

What can you do to improve things?

Facebook has its very own superpower, THE BOOST! Tentatively, your finger hovers over the button. You could exponentially increase your reach, and this could be the very push your wonderful business needs to conquer the world and aid you in your quest to become a titan of industry! Then you see a small charge promising a huge reach for just a few pounds, and you pause.

So do you do it?

There is a case to be made for both sides of the argument, and we are going to try and clear things up for you so that you can make an informed decision on whether or not you hit that button.

Firstly, what IS boost?

Boost is a feature Facebook has provided, to compensate for the shortfall in organic reach of posts on their platform. Organic reach is how many feeds your post makes its way into without taking an extra steps. Now, according to Facebook themselves, organic reach is in decline. This means that your posts are naturally making their way into less and less newsfeeds, and ultimately seen by less people.

The pros of boosted posts are fairly convincing.

Control: It couldn’t be easier to keep a watchful eye over a boosted post. You can cut the boost period short or extend one for a longer period based on its success.

Easy to use: It is so simple to boost a post. One press of a button, a quick once over by Facebook, and you’re away! Also, ANY type of post can be boosted, images, text, video, links to a website, ANYTHING!

Precise Feedback: Thanks to Facebook analytics, an exceptionally useful tool, you are given access to a detailed breakdown as to the reach of any post, including the boosted ones, so you can compare the difference and decide whether or not it is beneficial to you. This covers how many times a post has been viewed, how many times a link has been clicked, and the conversion rate.

Essentially, the ball is completely in your court. You have complete access to the audience you wish to target, the duration of the boost, and the budget you wish to stick to. The minimum boost available is £1 a day, so you can run an effective campaign for as little as £7 a week.

It’s not all roses however, as with anything, there are drawbacks too.

Although you will undeniably get your post into more newsfeeds, there is no guarantee you will receive any more enquiries than you were initially. A boosted post gets more people to see it, but unfortunately cannot hogtie someone and force them to buy your product or service.

If your goal is instant sales or enquiries, you may be opening yourself up to creating a money pit. The allure of the extra likes may create a false sense of success, but with no real or tangible money coming in as a result.

Another thing worth noting about boosted posts, is that once you boost, you CANNOT alter the content, which could be extremely frustrating if for example, you spot a typo after parting with your hard-earned cash.

With this in mind, the choice is entirely yours. We are not telling you to boost or not, but if you feel the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, then go forth and hit the button!
