Pick up some hints and tips on how to enjoy running your own business and how not to forget to look after yourself and spend some ‘work-free’ time to recharge your batteries.
The average number of sickness days per employee in the UK is 7.2 per year. When you are a sole trader that’s 7.2 days of not making money and letting your customers down. Whilst it might not seem like a lot on the surface being unwell when running your own business can have longer term effects – especially if you try to keep going when you are feeling under the weather. Whilst not at your peak you are more likely to put in a poor performance and deliver a poor standard of service to your customers.
It’s important to make sure that your work environment is well-equipped. Make sure you always have access to water and try and have a good mix of water with tea and coffee. Fast food may appeal due to its convenience but long term this is not good fuel for your body and may make you more susceptible to catching colds and viruses. Having a good variety of healthy snacks to hand will make sure that your energy levels are kept up during your long working day. During the winter months stock up on multi-vitamin supplements if you are happy to take them to boost your immune system.
When working alone, try and keep moving and stretching so that your body is loose and supple. Moderate exercise will increase your blood circulation, kick start your metabolism and keep your body warm. Make sure you have a first aid kit to hand for any minor injuries too.
With your business on your mind 24 hours a day actually getting a break from work might seem like heresy! But reducing or minimising the stress of your work can have a huge beneficial effect on your immune system and your general outlook. If it’s a sunny day then do take a walk outside for just 5-15 minutes rather than sitting inside wishing you were lying on a beach somewhere. A change of scene can have an immediate positive impact on the type of day at work that you have.
