The challenge
A new Connexions-Cheshire & Warrington project demanded the creativity of an innovative design company. Cheshire design agency greensplash, delivered a range of design and print services that helped to explore the question 'R We S'Dffrnt?'
Project brief for graphic design
Connexions-Cheshire & Warrington Limited, is a government provided service which offers information, advice, guidance and support services to 13-19 year olds and up to 25 year olds with LDD (Learner difficulties and disabilities).
Involving people of all ages from the local area, this design project involved a fascinating examination into how young, local people today spend their weekends, comparing this with the types of activities people from previous generations used to engage in. The relationships between the accounts of different weekends will be explored to answer the question: "Are we so different?"
A creative solution for Connexions
The young people’s imaginative ideas acted as a creative starting point for the range of graphic design services that greensplash were able to provide. These were further developed in the context of the overarching project aims and within the parameters of the Connexions brand guidelines, and importantly, in line with timing and budgetary limitations.
greensplash was responsible for developing the branding for the project, and producing a set of themed exhibition display materials and booklet, documenting the entire project across the Cheshire area. Both the graphic design and print design element of the project were delivered by greensplash.
Connexions' graphic design and style
The style for the Connexions project was influenced by two factors; seeing a place from three generational view-points and the teenage identity of the individuals involved in the project.
Incorporating these factors, the style of the poster was separated into two complementary elements: typography and image. The typography represented the vibrant and energetic enthusiasm of the young people and the image was split into 5 elements that housed images of individuals interviewed for the project.
Connexions' poster design
The poster design also had to clearly communicate information regarding the exhibition to the audience. For this purpose, a centred design and Connexions branding were employed to highlight the link between Connexions and the exhibition.
Design success for Cheshire's young people
Key to the process was ensuring that the young people had ownership, which is why emphasis was placed on collaboration and participation.
The project culminated in a series of exhibitions held in Cheshire in 2009.
